The invention relates to compositions and methods for the detection of pathogenic infections. The invention is essentially characterised in that it involves the use of therapeutic and diagnostic compositions and methods in order to increase or reduce the bond between a lysozyme polypeptide and a P17 polypeptide of Treponema pallidum (TP17) or polypeptides similar to Tp17. More specifically, the invention relates to compositions and methods for the detection, treatment or prevention of a pathogenic infection or chronic alterations and to binding assays which use polypeptides similar to Tp17 and lysozyme polypeptides.
