PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp capable of obtaining a large electric energy, necessary for making a discharge of a discharge lamp transfer from a glow discharge to an arc discharge, from a low output voltage of a DC/DC converter. SOLUTION: At a take-over circuit 16, before a breakdown detection circuit 166 detects the breakdown of the discharge lamp, a first capacitor 162 and a second capacitor 164 are charged in parallel by the DC/DC converter 11, and when the breakdown detection circuit 166 detects the breakdown, the breakdown detection circuit 166 turns on a switching element 165 and the first capacitor 162 and the second capacitor 164 are made to be discharged in serial connection, and the discharge of the discharge lamp is made to transfer from a glow discharge to an arc discharge.
