The locking mechanism comprising two bar-like cheeks(10a,10b) for gripping the machine tiebars(3) is mounted on the moving platen. The cheeks are spring-loaded(16) or are designed to act like springs whose force acts in the locking direction of the cheeks. Spring force on the cheeks is produced by one or more coil springs(16) or leaf springs. The cheeks may also be designed as part of a leaf or coil spring. Cheeks of two locking mechanisms are combined to form a common locking system. Two cheeks of a locking mechanism can be opened and closed by an eccentric. Opening of the cheeks against spring force is effected by a motor driven rack or spindle or a hydraulic power unit. One or more compressible dampers(17) are located between the opposing cheeks for damping the cheek movement in one or both end positions of the cheeks, preferably against the spring force.
