PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To support a search for a defective printed matter from among printed matters which are printed in large quantities.

SOLUTION: This control method comprises: a step S12 of acquiring printing result image data acquired by reading a printing result image from the printed matter; and a step S14 of determining the quality of the image data according to at least two mutually different standards for use in the detection of a defect from the image data, and of sorting the printed matter into at least three quality classes by the printing result image data acquired in the step S12. In the control method, processing is performed according to the quality class of the printed matter, which is determined in the step S14.
