The viscosity of solutions of rubber in aliphatic solvents is reduced by the addition of an alcohol and an asymmetrically substituted hydrazine or derivative thereof, or mixtures of these compounds. The term alcohol includes polyhydric alcohols and alcohols having ketone, ether, carboxyl and amino groups. Specified hydrazine derivatives are phenyl hydrazine and its oxalate, o-tolyl-, a -naphthyl-, o-xenyl-, 2 : 5-dichloro phenyl-, m-nitrophenyl-, p-nitrophenyl-, and cyclo-pentamethylene hydrazines, asymmetrical diphenyl- and dilauryl hydrazines, the benzoyl derivative of phenyl hydrazine, the phenol and a -naphthol and o -phenyl dithio carbazinic acid salts of phenylhydrazine, phenyl hydrazine-CO2 addition product, o-tolyl hydrazine-SO2 addition product, p-tolyl hydrazine-zinc chloride salt and methyl propylketone phenyl hydrazone. As solvents, the hydrocarbons from hexane to dodecane, hexylenes to dodecylenes, cyclohexane or straight-run or cracked petroleum or petroleum naphtha may be used. The rubber may first be treated with the hydrazine and dissolved in a mixture of hydrocarbon and alcohol, or dissolved in hydrocarbon and the solution treated with the alcohol and hydrazine. Fillers may be added to the cement; carbon black and sulphur should be added after the viscosity has been reduced. Warmth promotes the action of the thinners. The cements may be used for adhesives, impregnating, dipping or spreading, binders for wood flour, cork, cotton linters, wood or asbestos, or for the preparation of rubber isomers or derivatives.
