PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a metal slab in high efficiency and with high yield, when producing a metal slab having a desired width from a columnar metal ingot, which is made of a metal material such as titanium or zirconium and has various diameters. SOLUTION: By a method for producing a metal slab, a metal slab having a thickness of≥100 mm and <300 mm is produced from a columnar metal ingot having a diameter of≥700 mm and≤1,300 mm. After forging the above columnar metal ingot 11 to an intermediate-thickness metal ingot 12 having a dimension satisfying the following relations (1), (2), the intermediate-thickness metal ingot is rolled to a metal slab 13. The above relations are: (1) 300≤t≤600, and (2) 350-0.2t+W≤w≤450-0.2t+W, where t is a thickness of the intermediate-thickness metal ingot, w is a width of the intermediate-thickness metal ingot, and W is a width of the metal slab.
