A communications system including at least one data storage device for stori ng messages for respective users, and a plurality of mobile wireless communications devices (101) each associated with a respective user for accessing the messages stored on the data storage device. The system also including an adaptive polling engine (108) for polling the data storage devi ce for messages and providing the polled messages to the mobile wireless communications device (101). The adaptive polling engine (108) may advantageously learn respective user usage patterns for each mobile wireless communications device (101), and change a respective rate of polling for eac h mobile wireless communications device (101) based thereon.
