PURPOSE:To obtain a display device which has a large screen and a high density and is driven with high degree of time division, by forming one of stripes passing lattice intersections with a light emitting cell which emits light selectively with a stripe form and forming the other with an optical shutter cell which is switched selectively in a stripe form. CONSTITUTION:Intersections between stripe transparent electrodes 12 and 13 and stripe transparent electrodes 14 and 15 form picture elements of the display device. That is, when a sufficient voltage is impressed between an optional stripe electrode 14 of an EL cell 3 and the rear metallic electrode 15 facing this electrode 14, an EL material 18 held between these electrodes emits light with a stripe form. When a sufficient voltage is impressed between an optional stripe transparent electrode 12 and the stripe transparent electrode 13 facing this electrode 12, a liquid crystal layer held between these electrodes forms a stripe-shaped light transmission area. Thus, emitted light of the EL material 18 reaches the eye of an observer 19 through only the intersection between the tripe-shaped light emitting area of the EL cell 3 and the stripe-shaped light transmission area of the liquid crystal later. In this operation state, the crosstalk between X and Y electrodes does not exist on the structure.
