摘要 <p>PURPOSE:To obtain the ferroelectric liquid crystal element having an improved bistability by using a monomolecular film of an aromatic compd. to the titled element as an orientation film of the ferroelectric liquid crystal. CONSTITUTION:At least one of the orientation films 103a, 103b is composed of the monomolecular film of the org. compd. The aromatic compd. having an aromatic ring composed of a pi electron system has a tendency for being orientated parallel to the substrate as centering the aromatic ring. To improve the orientation of the org. compd., the org. compd. having plural, for example, 2-40 hydrophobic groups or portions is preferably used. The preferable hydrophobic group is, for example, 5-30C long chain alkyl group, etc. Especially, when the orientation film is composed of the monomolecular film of the aromatic compd. having plural hydrophobic groups, the orientation state of the molecule against a substrate is such the way that the hydrophobic group 3 such as the long chain alkyl group, etc., is vertically orientated against the surface of the substrate 1 attached the ITO electrode 2 thereon, and the plane surface 4 of the pi electron system contg. the aromatic ring is horizontally orientated against the substrate 1.</p>
