A process for drying and preserving freshly-cut grasses consists in heating the grasses in a liquid bath or in a closed chamber containing a moist atmosphere, to a temperature sufficient to facilitate or effect liberation of entrapped moisture (usually from 180 to 212 DEG F.) and subsequently squeezing the grasses to remove a large part of the moisture. The grasses are subsequently passed between rollers, which are preferably formed with circumferential V-shaped ridges. The liquid bath may contain water, or juices squeezed from previously-treated grasses, or it may consist of a solution of molasses or any suitable preservative. After passing through the rollers the grasses may be dried further by hot or cold air while kept in a state of agitation, or they may be stored in the moist condition in a silo. Specification 420,040, [Group XIII], is referred to. The Provisional Specification states also that the invention may be applied to the drying of crops and other vegetable substances. |
