PURPOSE: To make it possible to perform high-level stratifying combustion, by forming a stratum of air led in through an intake sub-route, at the center part of a combustion chamber, and executing this intake of air at the time after the middle of the intake stroke. CONSTITUTION:The first atratum 51 of air led in through a main intake route 11, is formed in a combustion chamber 3 on the outer circumference part. Then, the second stratum 52 of air led in through an intake sub-route 12, is formed at the center part of the combustion chamber 3. The intake of air through this intake sub-route 12, is executed at the time after the middle of the intake stroke. An injector 8 feeds fuel toward the second stratum 52 of air. In this way, stratifying combustion in the combustion chamber is performed effectively.
