PURPOSE:To make it possible to perform high-level stratifying combustion, by forming a stratum of air led in through an intake sub-route, at the center part of a combustion chamber, and feeding fuel toward this stratum of air. CONSTITUTION:A main intake route 11 feeds an air for generating a swirl flow A1 in a combustion chamber 3 along the circumference. An intake sub-route 12 feeds an air for generating an air flow A2 whose direction is different from that of said swirl flow A1, at the center part of the combustion chamber 3. Then, the first stratum 51 of air formed in the combustion chamber 3 along the circumference, and the second stratum 52 of air is formed at the center part of the combustion chamber 3. An injector 8 adapted to feed fuel toward the second stratum 52 of air, at around the compression top dead point of a piston 4, is set. In this way, condition of the stratums formed of a mixed air stratum part and an air stratum part, is maintained good till the ignition time, and consequently, higher-level stratifying combustion can be performed.
