PURPOSE:To machine the optional contour of a roll surface, by inputting coordinate data on a roll profile curve, calculating the cutter coordinate data, and according to these data, controlling a rotary driver of a cutter holder and a forward-backward driver. CONSTITUTION:At an arithmetic unit, a roll profile function is found out of coordinate data of plural points on a roll profile curve to be inputted from an input unit, and a numerical control program for cutting a roll 10 is automati cally composed, transmitting these data to a numerical control system by a telecommunication line. In conformity with the program transmitted, the NC system controls each drive of a tool rotating servomotor 36 for driving a cutter holder 30, a tool feeding servomotor 40 for making a tool head 34 forward or backward and a spindle motor or the like rotating and driving the spindle 18 connected to a roll 10. With this constitution, this roll 10 is machined by the cutter clamped to the cutter holder 30, thus a roll form having the targeted roll profile is secured.
