PURPOSE:To improve corrosion resistance without spoiling good magneto-optical characteristics by providing a recording layer consisting of a rare earth element- transition metallic element alloy layer. CONSTITUTION:A dielectric layer 2 consisting of SiO2, etc., the recording layer 3 consisting of the rare earth element (RE)-transition metallic element alloy layer and a protective layer 4 are successively laminated on a transparent substrate 1 consisting of glass or resin. The layer 3 is constituted of an RE-Cr- M1-M2 alloy in which RE is >=1 kinds of elements, M1 is Fe, Co or Fe-Co alloy and M2 is formed of >=1 kinds among B, C, Si, and P. Said layer is further added with 18-35atom% RE by the total amt. of RE+Cr+M, 2-10atom% Cr and 4-10atom% M2 by the total amt. of RE+Cr+M1+M2. The corrosion resistance is thereby improved and therefore, the deterioration of the writing and reproducing characteristics with age is effectively suppressed.
