PURPOSE:To obtain a coal-water slurry having highest possible concentration, low viscosity and low aging tendency, by using an additive containing a condensate (salt) of naphthalenesulfonic acid, etc., and formaldehyde as an essential component. CONSTITUTION:The objective coal-water slurry having high concentration can be produced by using an additive containing, as an essential component, a compound which is a condensate (or its salt) of (A) naphthalenesulfonic acid and/or an alkylnaphthalenesulfonic acid and (B) formaldehyde wherein the reacted molar number of the component B to the naphthalene nucleus is 0.97-1.10 and the average condensation degree is 35-500 as determined from weight- average molecular weight measured by GPC analysis.
