A method and apparatus for continuously separating fine particles from a supply liquor by means of gravity sedimentation in order to form a thick subnatant and a clarified supernatant largely free from suspended solids. The method involves regulating the concentration of solids suspended in the supply and controlling the means of addition and mixing of sedimentation adjuvants, such as coagulants and flocculants, in the supply stream in order to optimize the performance and efficient use of said sedimentation adjuvants. The machine includes a tank for containing liquids which has a vertical column or supply source mounted therein for receiving supply liquor. A plurality of underlying compartments includes introduction and mixing means for receiving the supply liquor and mixing with it chemical flocculants or coagulants, thus conditioning the supply before discharge from the lower part of the column directly to a pulp sheet stratum established inside the tank. Means are provided for increasing the concentration of supply solids by recirculating subnatant to the new supply stream or for reducing supply solids by introducing supernatant via the holes in the upper central column.
