PURPOSE:To recover the titled high-purity compound without containing impurities, e.g. organic sulfur, organic nitrogen compounds, etc., in high yield, by adding and dissolving a hydroxylamine derivative in crude 2-methylnaphthalene, cooling the resultant solution and separating deposited crystal substance. CONSTITUTION:A hydroxylamine derivative, particularly preferably mono ethanolamine, diethanolamine, triethanolamine, propanolamine or butanolamine is added to crude 2-methylnaphthalene, particularly preferably crude 2- methylnaphthalene containing >=90wt.%, more preferably 95-97wt.% 2- methylnaphthalene to selectively extract and remove impurities organic sulfur compounds or organic nitrogen compounds and the deposited crystal substance 2-methylnaphthalene is recovered. The amount of the added hydroxylamine derivative, particularly monoethanolamine used is 2-4 times based on the 2- methylnaphthalene.
