NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula [R<1> is H, methyl or methoxy; R<2> is (halogenated) lower alkyl or phenyl which may have lower alkyl]. EXAMPLE:[2,2'-Bis(diphenylphosphino)-6,6'-dimethylbiphenyl]ruthenium-d iacetate. USE:A catalyst for organic synthetic reactions such as asymmetric hydrogenation reaction. It has high catalytic activity and is producible at a low cost. PREPARATION:Ru2Cl4(L)2NEt3 [L is 2,2'-bis(diarylphosphino)-6,6'- dimethylbiphenyl; NEt3 is triethylamine] is used as a starting raw material and is made to react with a carboxylic acid salt in an alcohol solvent at 20-110 deg.C for 3-15hr. The starting raw material is preferably produced from a compound of formula [RuCl2(COD)]n (COD is cyclooctadiene) and the ligand L of the complex.
