DC power is converted to AC using PWM control by a bridge arrangement of transistor or GTO thyristor and diode pairs. The directions of the phase currents are sensed by detectors and voltage compensation is effected in accordance with the sensed directions. The PWM control is modified to minimize the wave distortion of the output voltage caused by dead time of the series-connected transistor-diode pairs. Where the bridge comprises GTO thyristors, current direction is detected as voltage across the thyristor gate and cathode.
