Exhaust gas from a diesel engine passes from a soiled gas chamber through an annular chamber formed by concentric sieve surfaces resp. of fine and coarse metal mesh, into the central clean gas exit chamber. During passage the gas traverses a charge of refractory non-metallic granules descending under gravity, and on which soot particles from the gas are deposited. Soot collected by the filter material is burned away in controlled conditions by heat developed from a pair of electrodes, pref. formed by the metal sieves, with the coarse mesh acting as earthed electrode. To ensure the granules are packed to effective density while descending, they are subjected to radial pressure from air compressed in an outer annular chamber surrounding the filter chamber.
