A method and apparatus is provided for applying to cellulosic sheet material a substantially smooth and level coating, which may be very thin, of a composition containing a relatively high weight percentage of particles that are predominantly of high aspect ratio. According to the invention a trailing blade paper coating apparatus includes a flexible blade mounted so as to be in contact with the web of cellulosic material to be coated at a location upstream of the trailing blade and downstream of the coating applicator.
