PURPOSE:To enable N-alkylation of amines represented by a specified formula at ordinary temp. and pressure, by supplying DC to a liq. mixture of the amines with alcohols represented by a specified formula. CONSTITUTION:DC is supplied to a liq. mixture of amines represented by formula I (wherein each of R<1> and R<2> may be the same or different with each other, and is H atom, alkyl, aryl or aralkyl group or R<1> and R<2> may bond to each other to form a hereto ring) with alcohols represented by formula II (Where each of R<3> and R<4> may be the same or different with each other, and is H atom, alkyl, aryl or aralkyl group or R<3> and R<4> may bond to each other to form a hetero ring or cyclic alkane) to alkylate the amines at the N positions. The concn. of the amines is preferably regulated to about 0.3-2wt.% and the reaction is preferably carried out in an inert gaseous atmosphere after <=about 0.1g/ml supporting electrolyte such as lithium nitrate and a catalyst such as platinum black are added.
