PURPOSE:To economically obtain a thawing material capable of effectively enhancing thawing in the farms in snowy areas, golf courses, etc., also having remedial effect on acidic soil, by calcining shell granules of specific size in specified conditions. CONSTITUTION:Shells such as of scallop or oyster are ground into granules with a size <=5mm followed by calcining the granules in, e.g. a calcining oven at 600-1,000(pref., 600-700) deg.C in the range 3-7 for the brightness, thus obtaining the objective thawing material. This thawing material gives gray color or similar thereto; therefore, enabling the radiational cooling during the night to be prevented, having advantageous thawing effect by scavenging multiply reflecting solar radiation in the daytime, and having no adverse effect on farm works, plant growth, etc. even mixed into soil after snowmelt.
