PURPOSE:To obtain the titled polymer useful as composite materials and electrical insulating materials, providing orientated films having excellent mechanical strength, especially tensile strength, by using specifically treated terephthalic acid and tolylene.diisocyanate as raw materials. CONSTITUTION:First terephthalic acid obtained by oxidizing paraxylene is treated in water and/or acetic acid by the use of a catalyst of noble metal. Then the treated terephthalic acid is reacted with tolylene-2,4-diisocyanate and/or tolylene-2,6-diisocyanate in the presence of an alkali metallic compound in a solvent such as N,N'-dimethylethyleneurea at >=100 deg.C to give the aimed polymer. As the concrete treatment of terephthalic acid, for example, an aqueous solution of terephthalic acid is treated with palladium and hydrazine.
