NEW MATERIAL:2,2-Dibromo-1-(1-naphthyl)-1-propanone expressed by the formula. USE:Useful as an intermediate for producing 2,2-difluoro-1-(1-naphthyl)-1-propanone having excellent uses as a blending material, etc., for insulating oils. PREPARATION:For example, a mixture of 1-(1-naphthyl)-1-propanone with 1-(2- naphthyl)-1-propanone synthesized by the Friedel-Crafts reaction as a raw material is subjected to substitution of the hydrogen atom at the 2-position of the propanone with bromine atom using a brominating agent and the resultant product is dissolved in a solvent. The obtained solution is cooled to carry out crystallization, separation and purification to afford the aimed compound expressed by the formula. Bromine gas and N-bromosuccinimide are preferred as the above-mentioned brominating agent. The reaction temperature is within the range of 0-80 deg.C. Furthermore, the above-mentioned raw material is obtained by reacting, e.g. naphthalene with propionyl chloride in the presence of a catalyst, such as aluminum chloride.
