PURPOSE:To obtain a reversible coloring and decoloring material usable in daily living environment and excellent in safety and economical efficiency, by containing a reversible coloring and decoloring composition based on an electron donating dye precursor having a lactone ring and an anionic surfactant in a support. CONSTITUTION:A reversible coloring and decoloring material is constituted by containing a reversible coloring and decoloring composition, which is based on an electron donating dye precursor having a lactone ring and an anionic surfactant for dispersing said precursor, in a support and reversibly repeats coloration and decoloration in response to moisture. As the electron donating dye precursor having the lactone ring, there are triphenylmethanephthalides, fluoranes, thiofluoranes, indolylphthalides, rhodamine lactams, azaphthalides or the like and, as the anionic surfactant, there are carboxylates, sulfonates, sulfuric ester salts or phosphoric ester salts. The mixing ratio of the dye precursor and the surfactant is desirably set to 1/1-1/10<5> on a wt. basis.
