PURPOSE:To prevent a polishing belt from generating end breakage and meandering motion, by forming both end parts of the polishing belt thinner than its central part. CONSTITUTION:If a roll, which winds a grinding belt 13, is driven, the grinding belt 13 rotates, and the grinding belt 13, being placed in this rotating condition, is pressed to surfaces of a metallic plate material or a cylindrical body and the like polishing that surface by the grinding belt 13. Here the grinding belt 13 forms its cross section into a trapezoid and its both end parts 7 thinner than central part 6. As the result, the grinding belt 13 decreases its grinding load smaller in the both end parts 7 as compared with that in the central part 6 in the width direction of the grinding belt 13. Accordingly, the grinding belt 13 is prevented from generating end breakage and meandering motion, while the grinding belt 13, when it performs grinding while being moved in the width direction, is prevented from biting in the end part of the grinding belt 13 even if the metallic plate material or the cylindrical body provides a stepped difference.
