PURPOSE:To accurately locate a trouble of an injector by judging the injector to be defective when the output of an O2 sensor is inverted within the time set shorter than the regular inverting cycle of the output of the O2 sensor. CONSTITUTION:During the operation of an engine, the quantity of fuel to be injected is calculated by a control unit 17 on the bases of both of the output signals from an air flow meter 8 and an engine revolution speed sensor 18. Said quantity of fuel is compensated on the bases of the output signals from an O2 sensor 15, a water temperature sensor 19 and an intake air temperature sensor 20 to determine the final quantity of fuel injected, whereby injecting said quantity of fuel from each of injectors 13. In this case, the fact that the rich air-fuel mixture and the lean air-fuel mixture changes alternately at the approximately constant cycle due to the time lag between the fuel injection time and the detected injection time can contribute to the trouble of the injector 13, when the O2 sensor is inverted within the specified period shorter than the usual inverting period.
