PRODUCTION OF WATER ABSORBING COMPLEX

PURPOSE:To readily obtain a water absorbing complex having improved water absorbing performance without any residual monomer under mild condition, by applying an aqueous solution containing an acrylic acid based monomer, polyoxyethylene alkyl ether, etc., to a fibrous substrate and reducing the resultant substrate. CONSTITUTION:An aqueous solution containing (A) a polymerizable monomer consisting essentially of acrylic acid having >=20% carboxyl groups neutralized with an alkaline metallic salt or ammonium salt, (B) a crosslinking agent [e.g. ethylene glycol di(meth)acrylate or polyglycidyl ether], (C) a polyoxyethylene alkyl ether having >=7HLB and (D) an oxidizing radical polymerization initiator (e.g. hydrogen peroxide) is applied to a molded fibrous substrate and then a reducing agent (e.g. ascorbic acid) is applied to polymerize the polymerizable monomer and form the aimed complex of a polymer derived from the polymerizable monomer and the fibrous substrate.
