The polynetwork rubber is a polymer production of a mixt. of ethylene, propylene and a lesser quality of nonconjugated dien (EPDM rubber) and contains both ionomer crosslinks and crosshinks formed by reaction of the rubber with S, a S doner, a methylol phenoleic resin or an organic peroxide. The EPDM rubber is treated with malei acid as anhydride of fumaric, e.g. masticated with maleic anhydride and a free radical generater such as benzothiazyl disulphide to form an adduct. The adduct is reacted with a polyvalent metal salt, hydroxid as oxide, e.g. ZnO to form an ionomer which is crosshinked with a vulcanizing agent.
