1,4-Cis-polybutadiene or butadiene copolymers with other related diolefins, are prepd. by catalytic polymn. or copolymn. of the monomer in the absence of solvents or diluents. The process comprises prepg. a catalytic mixt. by contacting an inert hydrocarbon vehicle with (a) Nd- oxide, alcoholate or phenate; (b) alcohol or phenol deriv.; (c) halogenide and/or halogen; and (d) one or more organometallic Al compd. or hydride deriv. The prepn. comprises continuous or discontinuous process operated in 2 successive phases by control of mol. wt., phase (i) at less than 30≦̸C, and phase (ii) at 30≦̸C or more.
