The new method for the non-contact and non-destructive testing of absorptive materials over their complete structure, especially for surface testing, is based on the photothermal effect. The surface zones (6.1) to be examined, illuminated by a laser (1), emit infrared light signals phase-shifted in time and space, which are detected by a scanner (2). The latter contains in its measuring head infrared light guides (8), which receive the infrared signals by means of their receiving end surfaces and feed the signals to a detector (10) from which they are fed, as electrical signals after amplification, to a computer equipment (14) for evaluation. The scanner for the excitation laser light beam and that for the reception of the infrared signals are preferably constructionally integrated. Accordingly, the subject-matter of the invention is also a device for carrying out the method. Material structures in the micrometer range can be examined, hence also the description "thermal microscope". <IMAGE>
