A new penem deriv. of formula (I) is prepd. by reacting a cpd. of formula (II) with sodium Iodide in an inert solvent at 0-35≦̸C. In the formulas, R is H or (a); R1 is a hydroxyprotecting group, especially t-butyl methyl sillyl. (II) is useful as an intermediate for preparing a penem antibiotic and/or beta lactamase inhibitor.
