The atmos. is represented by water in a tank. A second liq. representing the gas under investigation is introduced downwards into the water. This second liq. is an emulsion. This emulsion may be either liq. in liq. or gas in liq. The arrangement may be used to study situations either where the gas is lighter than the atmos. or where it is heavier. When a liq. in liq. emulsion is used, the liq. forming the light phase should be non-miscible with that forming the heavy phase. The liq. in which the emulsion is formed may be the same as that representing the atmos. or may be different but miscible with it. Emulsions formed in this way are perfectly adapted to represent the diffusion of gas in the small scale model and may be applied to the problems of diffusion in enclosed spaces such as industrial premises, and to the study of ventilation requirements, as well as the study of emissions from industrial chimneys. The use of an emulsion overcomes problems which arise with the use of saline in water when studying this effect in similar appts.
|
