Motor vehicle parts (6) are suspended in random order from a first rail (1) by means of hooks (3) fixed to the rail. The parts are transferred to a second rail (2) and arranged in a specified sequence by means of a device (10) which runs on a guide rail (8) mounted between the rails and at a higher level. The device (10) has a cross-beam which supports an endless chain (11). A hook (14) is attached to one of the links of this chain. The hook (14) moves horizontally under the hook (3) attached to the first rail. As the link, to which the hook (14) is attached moves around the chain guide wheel, the hook (14) moves upwards and lifts the part (6) clear of the rail and continued movement of the chain transfers the part to the second rail (2).
