The invention relates to a method for operating an electrostatic filter (electrostatic precipitator) with a plurality of electric fields, each of which is assigned a transformer/rectifier with a filter voltage regulator, the operating voltage being regulated as a function of the flue gas turbidity in the clean-gas duct. According to the invention, two steps using different high-voltage supplies are carried out to determine the respective flue gas turbidity minimum value, which is stored in a processor. In a third procedural step, the optimum energy consumption is then found and tuned into. This represents the minimum value of the energy consumption at a given flue gas turbidity, i.e. the optimum value for operating the precipitator.
