PURPOSE:To provide a cosmetic additive giving pleasant feeling to the skin when added to cosmetics such as shampoo, foundation, etc., by using a modified polyvinyl alcohol containing a cationic group such as primary amine, pyridine, imidazole, etc. in the molecule. CONSTITUTION:The objective cosmetic additive is composed of a modified polyvinyl alcohol containing cationic groups in the molecule, e.g. a modified polyvinyl alcohol containing the copolymer units of formulaI-formula IV[R<1>- R<3> are H or lower alkyl; B is -N(R<4>)R<5> (R<4> and R<5> are H or alkyl), etc.; A is a group bonding the N atom of B to the N atom of the amide group; X<-> is anion; R<7>-R<9> are H, alkyl or phenyl; R<10> is alkyl; D is aliphatic group bonding the N atom of B to the 0 atom of the ether group]. The polymer can be prepared easily and effectively, e.g. by copolymerizing polyvinyl acetate with a polymerizable monomer of formula V, etc. in the presence of a radical polymerization initiator, and saponifying the product according to the use.
