The cassette loading system comprises a holder storing a tape cassette, first transport device for horizontally transporting the cassette holder and a second transport device for vertically transporting the cassette holder. The holder is provided with a holder arm rotatable around an axis perpedndicular to the direction of inserting the cassette. A guide is provided responsive to the rotation of the holder arm for guiding the cassette holder upward and downward as the narrowest width of the cassette is horizontal. A detection device may be provided for detecting the completion of horizontally transporting the cassette. A preventing device may further be provided for preventing the cassette holder from being switched from a first pathway for the first transport device to a second pathway for the second transport device.
