A rip stopper comprises a flexible sheath of fabric-reinforced elastomer and a flexible core chemically bonded to the sheath throughout its length. The sheath has tensile load path discontinuities along the length of the core and at least in sheath regions remote from the core. The sheath is pref. of synthetic rubber reinforced with woven nylon cloth, and the core is a nylon rope. Discontinuities may be provided by lengths of the fabric arranged end-to-end throughout the sheath length. Rope ends pref. extend from the sheath and are turned back around fixing thimbles and spliced.
