The prim. drive of a spinning machine has an intermediate drive between the motor and the main belt, and consists of two sets of pulleys (33,34) at least two of which have different diameters (d), the pulleys within each set being rigidly attached to each other. A belt (45) takes the drive from one set to the other through one of the pulleys from each set. One or both sets of pulleys are displaced axially relative to each other, either by moving them or by reversing one of the pulley sets on its shaft, so that different pair of pulleys are brought into use by the belt drive. USE/ADVANTAGE - Gives a simple means of obtaining a wide range of speeds of the spinning machine even when the motor is only capable of limited speed variation.
