PURPOSE:To greatly suppress an increase in the electrostatic capacity of an element and a decrease in an electric resistance upon increase in an area by connecting a superconducting tunnel junction having Co[F/cm<2>] of an electrostatic capacity per unit area of a tunnel junction, and specifying the number of the junctions. CONSTITUTION:A radiation detecting element in which a superconducting tunnel junction is used as a radiation detector, is composed by connecting a superconducting tunnel junction having Co [F/cm<2>] of an electrostatic capacity per unit area of a tunnel junction or connecting two or more series connections in which the tunnel junctions are connected in series and connecting four or more tunnel junctions by at least one or more series junctions. When the total area of the tunnel junctions of the element is S[cm<2>], the number of the junctions is increased larger than 0.05 (SCo/(20X10<-12>F)0.5 by at least one series junction, and is smaller than larger one of 20 (SCo/5X10<-12>F)<0.5> or SCo/5X10<-12>F).
