The high pressure gas discharge lamp comprises a single ended pinched quarty discharge chamber (2) containing mercury, or mixtures of metal halides and a noble gas and having two discharge electrodes (4,5) of high melting point metal wire. The wire legs remote from the discharge are connected to molybderium foils (6,7) and hermetically sealed within the pinch region of the chamber my melting. The discharge points (18, 19) are formed by making a closed loops (20,21) at the ends of the wires. The ends (18, 19) forming the discharge loops face each other and the turns of the loops do not contact their adjacent turns where the wires crosses (24, 25). The loops lie in the plane of the discharge. The discharge electrodes are at right angles to the axis of the legs (22, 23).
