[Class 7 (ii)] A mixture of pulverized fuel and air is produced by passing part of the air through a pipe 2 into a chamber 23 containing pulverized fuel, with which it mixes, and then adding to the mixture thus formed another part of the air supplied through a pipe 3, the proportion of air passing through the pipe 2 to that passing through the pipe 3 being controlled according to the load on the engine by throttles 4, 5, but the total amount of air remaining constant. A distributing-chamber 9 and a filter 10 are provided at the inlet to the pulverized-fuel chamber 23. The air from the pipe 3 is added in a mixing-chamber 21 which is connected to the engine by a pipe 22. Pulverized fuel may be supplied to the chamber 23 from a chamber 26 through a valve 28. When the valve 28 is closed, the chamber 26 can be refilled without interfering with the working of the apparatus. Alternatively, there may be two pulverized-fuel chambers such as 23, the air being passed through either one or the other, so that when one is being used the other can be recharged with fuel. As a further alternative, the pulverized-fuel chamber may be supplied with pulverized fuel by ordinary conveyer means.
