The present invention relates to a method and to a device for controlling a headrest (22) mounted on the backrest (30) of a seat (24), in which a system is provided for detecting an overload of the motor (12) controlling the movement of the headrest, which system automatically stops the said motor if the overload is detected during the displacement of the headrest (22) into its position of use or which automatically reverses the drive on the motor (12) so that the headrest returns to its position of use, if the overload is detected during the displacement of the headrest towards its position of non-use. This makes it possible to remove, in complete safety, an object which has become jammed between the headrest (22) and the backrest (30) of the seat. <IMAGE>
