The brush holder incorporates microswitches (12) for monitoring the wear of the contact brushes. Each of the brush guides has an associated spring biased pressure hoop (5) for pressing the brush (9) into contact with the commutator or slip ring of the machine. At least one of these hoops (5) has a cam disc (10) for operating a microswitch (12). The microswitch lies on the opposite side of the press loop (5) to the brush pressure finger (7). Pref. each microswitch (12) is attached to the brush holder via an angled mounting plate (13).
