Continuous removal of ammunition propellant, avoiding pollution - by mixing with water, shredding, dewatering and combustion in fluidised bed

Removal comprises burning, and delivering to water-filled storage tanks. From these it is delivered in the moist state or as a suspension via a distributor and to a shredder supplied with water, and which forms granules of up to 30mm. dia., while avoiding a temp. rise above 60 deg.C, or the generation of sparks or dust. The mixt. of propellant and water is stored in a sealed vessel and fed to a unit with explosion barrier for controlled dewatering. It is burnt in a fluidised bed, to which additives reducing nitrous oxide e.g. urea or crude brown coal are supplied in a proportion up to 50% by wt. Air is supplied in stages to the combustion chamber. ADVANTAGE - Safe operation without environmental pollution.
