PURPOSE:To provide a method for effectively producing methyl(or ethyl)benzyl itaconate and methyl(or ethyl)phenethyl itaconate by an ester interchange method. CONSTITUTION:A method for producing methyl(or ethyl)benzyl itaconate or methyl(or ethyl)phenethyl itaconate by subjecting dimethyl(or diethyl) itaconate and benzyl alcohol or phenethyl alcohol to an ester interchange reaction in the presence of a catalyst, characterized in that the banzyl alcohol or phenethyl alcohol is used in an amount of 0.40-0.95 mole and that a specific aromatic hydrocarbon is fed from one side of a reactor and simultaneously distilled out from the other side together with the by-produced methyl(or ethyl) alcohol.
