Some prior art machines for winding on or off continuous strips of material have guide heads with a guide element (6), shaped substantially in the form of a hollow cylinder, which can be inserted in a sleeve (2) on the roller and which is mounted on a trunnion bearing (4, 5) so that it can move through a limited angle to adjust to flexing of the sleeve. The invention calls for the guide element (6) to be rotatably mounted on a trunnion (4, 5) which is circular in cross-section and is secured so that it cannot rotate. Located between the trunnion (4, 5) and the guide element (6), near the end of the trunnion (trunnion part 5), is a radial bearing (8) capable of angular movement and, in front of the radial bearing, a peripheral support element (11) capable of elastic deformation in the radial direction.
