The method for producing synthetic thickeners based on aqueous dispersions of acrylic and/or methacrylic acid copolymers with n-alkyl acrylates with the length of the chain C1-C4, especially for thickening aqueous dispersion systems, especially for water emulsion paints, consisting in the emulsive polymerisation of a mixture of monomers in the presence of known emulsifiers, a buffer and a polymerisation initiator, consisting in that hydroxylamine hydrochloride in the amount of 0.001-0.01 per cent by weight in relation to the sum of monomers is used as a polymerisation regulator, the relation of hydroxylamine hydrochloride to the sum of the initiator used being 1:60-600.
