The invention relates to a coolant and lubricant installation for rolling mills (1) in which material to be rolled, especially strip (2), is rolled in reversing mode. In order to be able to supply the rolling mill (1) with highly pure coolant and lubricant by means of an economical coolant and lubricant installation, the coolant and lubricant returned from the rolling mill (1) into a collector tank (11) is purified by a filter installation (12) in the main flow and taken to a storage tank (8) from which the purified coolant and lubricant may be fed back to the rolling mill (1). Only as much coolant and lubricant is supplied to the rolling mill (1) as is needed for cooling and lubrication and even then only when it is absolutely necessary. The filter installation (12) is matched to the average volume flow of purified coolant and lubricant to be supplied to the rolling mill (1).
